1946 that is complete and in decent shape though is not without flaws: Spine is rough with splitting in several places and a couple of missing chunks (1/4″ at top to 1/2″ at top staple) plus a 1/2 split at bottom of spine. Comic is not attached at bottom staple and is just barely attached at top staple. Pencil mark in logo next to “C” in Comics. A curious flaw is that the top and bottom edges were cut in a crooked fashion and the staples are not lined up along the edge. Please see close up pictures; 5″ of bottom of book looks as though you can see the interior page, but that 1/8″ strip of white is actually the cover. At the top the letters “per” of the Superman logo are cut off. Also, the physical first three pages of the interior are cut crooked by 1/4 at the far right edge (decreasing to the left side of the book) at an angle though it does not affect any of the artwork/story. Also, see close up pictures of back cover as the top staple is about 1/8″ from the edge of the spine while the bottom staple is about 1/16″ away from the edge; as you’ll see, there are two 1/2 tears at the top staple. I don’t think that the staples were ever removed and restapled, but I’m also not an expert. Because the staples are offset, there is a 1/8 difference between halves of the book at the center page, again because the staples are not centered along the spine; see close up of left edge of full back cover picture. I hope that’s clear. Despite these flaws, there are plenty of great stories featuring Batman & Robin versus The Joker (always a fun read), Air Wave, Slam Bradley and the Boy Commandos along with “funnies” and ads. This is also the first issue of Detective Comics to feature the smaller logo after using the large one for 113 issues. Also, as with many black covers of the time, the finish is of a matte look as opposed to glossy.
